Abiove has developed a certification process that grants a quality seal to biodiesel.

Named Bio+, the seal attests that the biodiesel produced by certified companies exceeds the technical specifications of the Brazilian Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP), which are among the most rigorous in the world.

Understand how the seal was created

Quality Committee

To closely monitor all production processes, discuss the needs of the fuel market, be ahead of legislation and overcome some challenges related to biodiesel, Abiove member companies have created a Quality Committee.

Technical assessments indicated that the metals present in biodiesel (sodium-potassium, calcium-magnesium and phosphorus groups) and which are part of its specification should be reduced. So, it was done: the companies that applied for and received the Seal began to produce biodiesel that fully complied with ANP’s RANP 45/2014 specification. And they went further, reducing those metals by 40%, a requirement imposed by Bio+. This voluntary decision was converted into law, since ANP itself adopted the same reduction measure in its new biodiesel specification, RANP 920/2023, published on April 4, 2023.

The inspiration came from the meetings that the Committee holds with its main clients: the fuel distributors.

This is how the first version of Bio+ was launched

Launched in May 2020, aiming to create a brand that would distinguish its holders from other companies, demonstrating rigor in terms of quality.

These characteristics were validated by an independent and accredited laboratory, which collected biodiesel from the shipping tank of the industrial plants. In addition, and to ensure that companies were indeed producing with the required level of excellence, for two months all batches produced underwent internal analysis.

Under this seal version, 5.4 billion liters of biodiesel were produced without a single record of issue experienced by clients.

Bio+ 2.0

Even with a full history of achievements and buyer acceptance, Abiove understood that it could further improve the Seal. It initiated technical discussions on potential improvements of a product that already had characteristics more restrictive than those required by law. It was then that the production processes of companies began to be evaluated and certified. The purpose was to add more requirements that ensured the biodiesel produced, at any time, would be of superior quality.

Bio+2.0 was created.

Criteria

To make the companies’ internal quality systems more consistent, greater rigor was required in accordance with the following criteria:

  • Regular Characteristic

    All company’s internal activities in which any potential failure can be detected before the product is sent to the customer. Examples: cleaning of internal intermediate tanks, workforce training matrix, training of suppliers, etc.;

  • Major Characteristic

Those that are directly visible to customers and require stricter control. Examples: cleaning and checking of transport trucks, compliance with biodiesel specifications, system for treating nonconformities at the customer, etc. To obtain the seal, no major nonconformities are accepted.

With these principles applied, a protocol was developed, and all plants that wished to obtain Bio+ in its newer version had to comply with it.

The quality systems were verified by a third-party entity, that is, external to the plants and Abiove. Therefore, a partnership was established with an independent institute outside the fuel industry: the Institute of Automotive Quality (IQA). The challenge of auditing biodiesel production processes was accepted by IQA, whose excellent reputation was built in the automotive and auto parts segment.

In August 2023, this certification cycle was concluded: eight plants were successfully verified. They received the new Bio+ seal, with the stamp of Abiove and IQA, and currently offer biodiesel produced under a certified quality system.
